A storm system and cold front moving across the area will bring the possibility of heavy rain, gusty winds and some minor flooding soundside during the overnight hours into Monday morning.
“Strong south to southwest winds tonight in advance of a strong cold front will produce minor sound-side flooding across portions of the northern Outer Banks and Roanoke Island,” said forecasters from the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City.
A High Wind Warning runs from 10 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday. Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines and scattered power outages are expected, according to the NWS.
The Coastal Flood Advisory runs from 10 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday, with many of the usual spots along the sounds prone to flooding seeing water levels of 1 to 2 feet above ground.
“Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes near the Pamlico Sound will experience shallow flooding,” said NWS forecasters.

Showers and some thunderstorms are possible ahead of the cold front, with locally heavy rainfall possible overnight. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms that could produce an isolated tornado, mainly along the central and southern N.C. coast.
The same storm system spawned deadly tornadoes on Sunday across the Deep South, with one twister killing at least two dozen people in Alabama.
Keep a radio tuned to Beach 104, 94.5 WCMS, 99.1 The Sound or Classic Rock 92.3 for possible warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
Drier but much cooler weather is expected through most of the work week, with the exception of some light wintry precipitation chances Tuesday morning.
