The National Weather Service has issued wind and high surf advisories for the Outer Banks as a cold front blows through overnight.

The front brings with it showers and thunderstorms, which prompted a short-lived tornado warning for central Currituck County on Monday night.

As high pressure builds in from the north behind the cold front, gale force north to northeast winds will develop Tuesday into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service’s Newport/Morehead office has issued a wind advisory for the Outer Banks from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, with sustained winds of 25-25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. Scattered power outages are expected, NWS reports.

The strong winds will also produce large, dangerous seas of 10 to 15 feet from Cape Lookout north Tuesday and into Wednesday producing minor beach erosion and ocean overwash at times of high tide, which is 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Monday’s temperatures in the 70s will drop dramatically ahead of the front, dipping to 45-50 by daybreak.
