One person has been killed and two people were hurt, including one critically, in the first of two multi-vehicle crashes on N.C. 168 in Moyock that happened just over one-hour apart.
The first wreck happened in front of the Moyock Commons Shopping Center at 4:12 p.m., and involved two vehicles and a motorcycle.
A sport utility vehicle and the motorcycle were on fire when emergency units arrived, according to Currituck Fire and EMS Chief Ralph “Chip” Melton.
Melton said bystanders had already removed the driver of the SUV from the vehicle.
“The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene, the driver from the SUV was critically injured, and the driver of the third vehicle, a pickup truck, sustained minor injuries,” Melton said in a press release.
The Nightingale medical helicopter from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital flew the critically injured patient from the scene on Caratoke Highway.
A two-vehicle crash with injuries was reported at the corner of N.C. 168 and Shingle Landing Road in Moyock at 5:18 p.m.
Two people were transported to area hospitals, while a third refused treatment, Melton said.
Units from Currituck Fire & EMS, Moyock Fire Department, Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, Chesapeake Fire Department, Dare County EMS and Currituck County Sheriffs Office responded to the wrecks.
The N.C. Highway Patrol was still conducting an investigation of the crashes.
This is breaking news, more details will be added as they become available.
