Outer Banks Triathlon officials announced Thursday the swimming portion will not place in all three events scheduled for this weekend, and they will now be bike-run only.

Testing by the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality continued to show unsafe bacteria levels in the Croatan Sound, where the swimming portion is held off the Old Swimming Hole and the Dare County Regional Airport.

“Your health and safety are our main concerns,” Outer Banks Sporting Events posted on their website, obxse.org. “The lingering effects of a hurricane can mean bad things for open water swimming for a while.”

Saturday features the Olympic and half-triathlon distances, and the sprint triathlon is on Sunday.

“Once again, thank you for staying flexible and Racing Outer Banks Style,” event organizers said.
