UPDATED: Snapchat threat warned of shooting at First Flight High School

A threat posted on the social media platform Snapchat of a shooting at First Flight High School sent all three First Flight schools into lockdown late Monday morning and ended with a person in police custody.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office notified the school system of the threat at 11:45 a.m. and First Flight high school, middle school and elementary school were immediately placed in precautionary lockdown, schools superintendent John Farrelly said in an email to parents.

“While there was no threat made to the elementary and middle schools, due to proximity we exercised the lockdown measure as a precaution,” Farrelly wrote. “Within minutes of the threat, the Dare County Sheriff’s Department detained an individual at his Dare County residence. After approximately 15 minutes, the lockdown was lifted by law enforcement officials and we resumed the school day at 12:00.”

The sheriff’s office investigation continues, but Farrelly said he expects “the individual to be charged to the fullest extent of the law.”

Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said extra law-enforcement presence would remain at First Flight High School as a precaution.
