A southwest Ohio man who became exhausted while trying to retrieve a kayak from the Albemarle Sound was rescued Tuesday morning by emergency personnel.

The incident was reported to Currituck 911 at 11:35 a.m., according to Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brooks Hart.

Hart said the 55-year-old from New Lebanon, Ohio, waded into the sound off Griggs Acres Drive in Point Harbor without a personal flotation device to retrieve the kayak, which did not have a paddle.

While in the water, northeast winds increased and the man became too exhausted to make it back to land on his own.

Lower Currituck VFD Capt. Trey Hart and Currituck Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin McCord launched a LCVFD boat and were able to retrieve the man.

They brought the victim back to shore where he was examined by Currituck EMS and was determined to have suffered no injuries.
