A young harbor seal stopped by Pea Island for a quick beach visit Thursday afternoon.

A National Park Service photographer grabbed an image of the youngster sunning himself by a rock, waves crashing in the background.

Outer Banks Forever, a new nonprofit fundraising partner of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, posted a close-up photo with the caption: “Catching some rays …”

Juvenile seals are common sight along Outer Banks beaches in the winter months. After leaving their mothers, the young seals venture outside of northern territories in search of food, and often stop here to sun and sleep.
