They’re going home. Six sea turtles treated and rehabilitated at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island will be released tomorrow, Saturday, May 4, on Hatteras Island.

The release will take place at 11 a.m. at the Frisco Bath House, 56310 N.C. 12, just south of Frisco.

The four loggerhead sea turtles and two green sea turtles were treated at the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center at the aquarium, and were recently cleared for release by the veterinary team. Of these turtles, five recovered from being cold-stunned this past winter, and the sixth is healthy again after healing from an entanglement.

The event is open to the public and weather dependent. Attendees are asked to obey parking signs. If the lot is full, parking on the shoulder of N.C. 12 (completely off the highway) is permitted.

The aquarium thanks partners at Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) for help in returning the turtles to the sea.
