The Outer Banks SPCA is taking care of more than 80 animals — everything from goats and chickens to ponies and dogs — seized last month in Wanchese during a cruelty investigation.

The investigation began after complaints of cruelty were filed with the SPCA about a home on Brinkly Drive in Wanchese.

Animal control, the SPCA and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on the home, where they found “extremely neglected, noxious and unsafe” environmental conditions, the SPCA said in a news release. Dare County Environmental Health and social services were also on site.

The animals were removed from the property on April 23 and April 24. Species include dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, goats, geese, two ponies, one horse, a pig and more.

All animals removed are receiving care and treatment by the SPCA. The investigation remains open and charges have not yet been filled.

“The Outer Banks SPCA is working hard to meet the individual needs of each of the animals.” the news release said. “If you are able to do so, please consider making a contribution.”

Donations can be made in person at the Dare County Animal Shelter, online via www.OBXSPCA.org /donate, or mailed to PO Box 2477, Manteo NC, 27954.
