Man running across U.S. 158 hits pickup, then run over by car

A man running across U.S. 158 in Kitty Hawk on Friday night suffered serious injuries after he collided with a pickup truck and then was hit by a car.

Kitty Hawk Police Chief Joel Johnson said the incident happened in the mile post 3.5 area on North Croatan Highway. The closest crosswalk to that area is at Kitty Hawk Road to the south.

Witnesses saw the man, whose identity has not been released, trying to run from the east side to the west side of the bypass at 10:20 p.m.

He first ran into the left rear quarter panel of a Chevrolet pickup truck, fell onto the roadway and was run over by a Toyota sedan.

Both vehicles stopped at the scene, Johnson said, and there was no evidence that either of the drivers were at fault.

The victim was unconscious but did have a pulse and was breathing when Dare County EMS arrived. He was flown by Dare Medflight to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

An update on his condition was not available Saturday morning.
