Traffic on the William B. Umstead Bridge over Croatan Sound will be reduced to one lane on weekdays for the next month for a required inspection.
The 64-year-old bridge between the northern end of Roanoke Island and the mainland that some call the Old Manns Harbor Bridge, will have alternating lane closures between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during weekdays through May 23.
Traffic control during the closures will be handled using flagmen and motorists need to use caution and anticipate delays as each lane takes turns traveling along the 2.8-mile bridge.
Travelers can avoid potential backups by using the Virginia Dare Bridge just south of Manteo.
