Tropical Storm Humberto became a hurricane Sunday night with sustained winds Monday morning of 85 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
Humberto is expected to make a turn east of the Georgia/ South Carolina coast and stay well offshore, bringing large surf and breezy conditions to the Outer Banks starting midweek.
A high pressure system building from the north and Humberto tracking east will also result in lower temperatures, with highs in the 70s, giving us a “first hint of fall” late this week, according to the National Weather Service Newport/Moorhead City forecast office.
Some beach erosion and minor coastal flooding will be possible for the Outer Banks due to the prolonged gusty northeast winds and high surf, the weather service said.
