Humberto now a Cat 2 hurricane; high surf advisory in effect for OBX

A dry cold front moving across the area and Hurricane Humberto offshore will combine to bring windy conditions to the region and especially along the Outer Banks through Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for the Outer Banks through Friday as Humberto — now a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 100 mph — passes by well offshore.

Gusts of up to 40 mph are possible in some areas this week, which could bring down branches, limbs and trees weakened by Dorian. The south swell from Humberto and the onshore wind will create dangerous surf conditions and the possibility of ocean overwash at high tide later this week.

Forecasters say seas will build to six to eight feet tonight, peaking at eight to 11 feet Wednesday night through early Friday.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories about newly-formed Tropical Depression Ten, which will approach the northern Leeward Islands Thursday night or Friday.

The system is forecast become a hurricane later this week. Any potential threat to the U.S. East Coast is too soon to forecast.
