Boobears ran away when lightning sparked a fire in Jarvisburg Wednesday night.

No people were home at the time and no one was injured, but the house was gutted by fire. Firefighters’ efforts were hampered by lack of readily available water supply, neighbors told OBXToday’s Sam Walker.

The Lower Currituck, Crawford, Corolla, Moyock and Southern Shores fire departments and Currituck Fire and EMS responded, along with the Currituck Sheriff’s Office.

Power was out in the Meadow Lake neighborhood after the blaze.

  1. The fire hydrant was inoperable because the lake was dry. The hydrant and lake are literally in our back yard less than fifty feet from our house that burnt down. The nearby gravel pit causes our water table to go down. All of our wells dried up previously and, from my understanding, water is supposed to be pumped back into our lake regularly but that has not happened all summer.
