Do you remember? The old Kitty Hawk-Southern Shores intersection

Do you remember riding up and over the dunes and seeing the ocean for the first time from this very spot in the photo above?

Back when the “Beach Road” was the only road. When “The Bypass” was still marked Bypass U.S 158, the Beach Road was Business U.S. 158, and N.C. 12 didn’t start until you got to Whalebone Junction?

The Town of Southern Shores brought back memories on Friday of the Outer Banks of old in their bi-monthly newsletter.

The picture, courtesy of Lynn Usher, shows what the intersection of North Virginia Dare Trail and Ocean Boulevard at the border between Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores looked like long ago.

Of all the changes that have come to our sandbar, the stern warning on the sign from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office still applies though.

We would like to do more of these “Do you remember?” features in the future, and you can help.

Send your personal photos or video of what the Outer Banks looked like in the past, with a few words about the memories the image brings back for you. Just send them to news@www.obxtoday.com.
