UPDATED: Damaged fiber line causing Outer Banks AT&T wireless outage

And … it’s out again.

Service was restored Friday night after many AT&T wireless customers on the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina went without starting Thanksgiving afternoon.

But the repair was apparently short-lived. On Saturday morning, customers on the Outer Banks and the mainland were reporting no service yet again.

“We continue to work closely with the local service provider in the Outer Banks area as they make repairs to restore wireless service,” AT&T spokeswoman Ann Elsas said Saturday afternoon. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Elsas said Friday the outage was caused by a damaged fiber optic cable that is maintained by another company.

Details on when service may be restored have not been made available.

  1. Spent an hour on the phone with AT&T and at no time did they inform me of this. All they did was troubleshoot my phone, ask if it has been updated then advised the issues I was having was being elevated to level 2 support.

They are as bad as Charter / Spectrum

  2. Fiber optic again? This excuse was old two years ago. Smart phone service has now been restored. Flip phone still isn’t working. AT&T, don’t you think it’s time to give your customers a rebate instead of another subterfuge

  3. Hmmm…someone is not relaying the correct information. A “damaged” fiber line? This is not an analog connection that can be “damaged”. Fiber either has a signal or it doesn’t. If light is traveling the fiber, it is on. If there is no light, the fiber is cut or disconnected at a junction.
Secondly, the idea that a single fiber bundle can take down an entire network is implausible in this day and age. I refuse to believe that a provider of a service as critical as mobile phone service would design a system with a single point of failure. Surely you jest!

  4. Ace Roinox is right. I wonder what the real story is? Why should AT&T Ann Elsas not just tell the truth? If she is not telling the truth, that will absolutely make me change companies.

    • Verizon had no problems. I have AY&T, my husband has Verizon (long story) and his has worked perfectly the entire time.

  5. Staying at Camp Hatteras…phone went out Thanksgiving..Came on last night bout 9:30 pm..Off today again…..nothing no service…have straight talk ..called them yesterday..they not even aware of problem or they lying too

  6. All phone lines suffer at someone’s stupid digging and charter takes the blue ribbon, these people go down at least once a month

  7. My phone went out once again this morning… Over by the Nissan in Elizabeth City. I highly doubt it was something small to cause such a big problem. I have a busy day today and this is causing a lot of issues. You would think they would give us a discount for how much we have to pay.🤬🤬
