May 15 is always a keystone date on the Outer Banks. That’s when the N.C. Department of Transportation sends out crews along parts of N.C. 12 to change speed limit signs from 45 to 35 mph.
The seasonally-lowered speed limits in sections of Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Frisco are instituted due to the increase in vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
Speed limits along those stretches of N.C. 12 will got back to 45 mph on September 15.
